Most of us know heart disease is the number one killer in the United States. Our goal is to decrease your risk of premature death from heart disease. We do this by assessing your personal cardiac risk. You will be presented with a % risk of heart attack in the next 10 years. This is done by looking at your risks.
The major risk factors for heart disease are high blood pressure, smoking, obesity, sedentary life style, diabetes, previous heart attack, family history of premature heart disease and high cholesterol. By evaluating you for these risk factors, we can then take action.
During the process of evaluation a blood pressure, history and blood work will be done. We may need to check for more than high cholesterol, with the blood analyses based on your personal history and your family history. Some patients are interested in getting a calcium score. We can do this by ordering a CT of the heart through our local hospital, YVMC.
Putting all this information together, we can then come up with a plan that is best for you. Your plan may include life style changes such as diet or exercise, stress management, supplements, prescription medications or further monitoring. Your plan will be specific to you and your risks. It may not be the same as your spouses or neighbors but tailored to your individual needs. Make an appointment today to learn what you can do to lower your risk.
